Scholarship Update NFTS

Sargent-Disc is delighted to sponsor two Scholarships for students taking the Production Management Diploma course at the National Film and Television School.

 Kirsty and Tom

Kirsty Barham and Tom While - the recipients of the Sargent-Disc Production Management Scholarships.

Kirsty Barham, a recipient of the Scholarship, tells us of her experiences on the course:

I am just over half way through my Production Management course at the National Film and Television School. Since starting the course I have Production Coordinated a 16mm short film, Production Managed a digital fiction project and Production Managed a COAP commercial sponsored by Nodak/ Nahemi. We have also had many workshops with leading professionals from the industry including Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling, Health and Safety, Location Scouting, Casting, Legals, Post Production, Production Accounting, working as a freelancer and much more.

After our digital fiction project we went on to do a month of work experience, which we had to research and organise for ourselves. I spent two of my weeks at Sky Vision as the office runner researching for their new up and coming projects. I found this placement very useful as it taught me new ways to think out side of the box to get results for what you are researching. My second placement was a paid position as a 3rd AD/floor runner, with a stunt unit for a new E4 drama called Glue. This was an amazing experience as this was my first time on a stunt unit and I really learnt a lot about different equipment and Health and Safety issues, which are key for Production Managers to know. My last placement was a paid role as Production Manager on an Armani promotional video that was produced, directed and shot by graduates of the NFTS. This was a great project to work on; I felt I really strengthened my knowledge of location negotiation, contracts and working with clients.

After returning from our month of placements we had a two day Health and Safety workshop which gained us out Creative Industries Safety Passport qualification. Our workshop included assessing different types of risks, a place crash, working in a tank, pyrotechnics and difficult locations. We were given a short script, which we then recce'd in Black Park and followed up with an industry level risk assessment.

We have also been assigned to our graduation summer fiction projects; this is the most ambitious project for all second year students, with a bigger budget, stunt driving and filming on a remote location. We now have six weeks in pre-production and are in full swing looking for locations, drafting budgets, locking off the script and finding cast. I feel ready to put all the skills I have learnt on this course into action.

Throughout my time here at the NFTS, I feel that I have made some invaluable contacts and more importantly enhanced my Production Management skills. I feel my knowledge and understanding of the role has strengthened immensely. Everything I have learnt so far and will continue to learn is all thanks to Sargent-Disc because without their incredibly generous scholarship my attending the NFTS would not have been possible.
