Sargent-Disc at the Edinburgh TV Festival

Sargent-Disc Digital Production Office® Forum

Sargent-Disc attended the Edinburgh TV Festival between 22nd -24th August to launch the Digital Production Office® Forum. The Forum provided delegates with a place to network with new and existing colleagues, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the latest Digital Production Office® applications that could help to increase the efficiency, and reduce costs and the carbon footprint of their next production.

Sargent-Disc was also joined by leading UK production finance and sustainability experts from BAFTA albert, the British Film Institute, and the British Film Commission providing 1-2-1s for delegates interested in learning more about Production's Environmental Impact, UK Tax Relief, and Financing and Producing High-end scripted television in the UK.

Making a Digital Production Office - Contracting Talent and Crew

Dr. Laurence Sargent chaired Sargent-Disc's workshop focussing on the importance of contracting talent and crew efficiently. The panel, consisting of Seth Roe, Senior Associate at Wiggin LLP, and Claire Gooding, Production Manager at Arrow Media, highlighted issues that can arise when crew and employees are not contracted properly.

Seth stressed the significance of completed crew contracts as emails or other forms of written agreement will not cover the full terms of employment. Issues with employment terms usually come to light further along in the production process, not when a crew member or employee is initially onboarded. When emphasising the importance of obtaining fully executed contracts, Seth recalled an instance when a production tried to let a crew member go. It only became apparent at this time that his contract had never been fully signed, only sent back to the production company marked up with amends. Unfortunately, this created unnecessary financial expense and time wasted on the production's side as eventually an agreement was put in place with a cost to be paid to the employee.

Claire commented that Arrow Media had issues getting employees to sign and complete start paperwork on time, and that CrewStart™ has helped reduce this. CrewStart™ is Sargent-Disc's digital onboarding system which enables productions to complete, approve and distribute start forms, contracts and timesheets to crew and employees. The application also ensures the entire onboarding process is auditable with every change or comment recorded. Production companies can also bulk download start paperwork via CrewStart™ at the end of a project, providing a secure and efficient method of obtaining all necessary documentation.

All members of the panel emphasised the importance of onboarding crew and employees correctly and regularly checking the validity of contracts in order to prevent employment disputes in the future.
