Summary

We caught up with David Freedman, a student taking the Production Management Diploma course at the NFTS. David is also one of this year's recipients of scholarship support from Sargent-Disc.

David Freedman, Production Management Student at the National Film and Television School

'I am only just over a month into studying for a Post-Graduate Diploma at the National Film and Television School(NFTS) but it feels like several months due to the amazing number of talented people I've met and the variety and intensity of projects I've been working on so far, not to mention extra-curricular activities including masterclasses given by industry veterans. The School's facilities, tutors and students, not to mention it's famous alumni, are truly impressive and somewhat overwhelming. I feel very privileged and thankful to the school and for the support of Sargent-Disc to be able to study at one of the World's finest film schools in an often overlooked but very important part of the industry that Sargent-Disc knows well; Production Management.

The most recent Quarterly Screenskills Barometer survey again listed priority shortages and skills gaps for production managers, financial skills, budgeting, organisational skills, management and leadership skills and project management, so it's great to learn the craft and gain unrivalled expertise and qualifications at an institution like NFTS. I've already have the chance to work on scheduling, budgeting, contracts and many other aspects of pre-production and production on fiction Shorts, documentary and TV - filming in NFTS' own state of the art studios, on location and at SKY studios in nearby West London. I was also invited to tour Sargent-Disc's nearby impressive new HQ and meet Laurence Sargent and his team. I've also found time to take-up invites to screenings including a preview of the terrific 'Le Mans '66' (with a Q&A with director James Mangold) at the BFI London Film Festival.'

'Most recently I worked on a Short Fiction project titled 'What the Eye Don't See' shooting on location at a house in Beaconsfield where we were visited on set by Emma Hicks, Sargent-Disc's lovely Marketing and Sales Manager. She was lucky enough to visit on one of the few days when we didn't experience torrential rain! Happily we had very few exteriors to shoot so the weather didn't adversely affect the filming too much. Although one of our gazebos collapsed due to the sheer weight of rain water, which I'll be sure to add to future risk assessments! This was an interesting project as we were filming on 16mm so it was great to go 'old school' and shoot on proper film, with all of the attendant kit and procedures. I look forward to my first 35mm production! It was also interesting as two of our lead cast were young actors still at school. The quality of their performances was incredibly impressive given their young ages. The additional process and stringent procedures required for child licensing and welfare was also great to learn and will stand me in good stead for future productions I'm sure.'

I look forward to the remaining  11  months of professional development on the course at NFTS, which I'm sure will feel like several years, and especially look forward to work experience opportunities in the industry. I'll also be sure to check-in with the wonderful team at Sargent-Disc and let them know how I'm getting on with my journey into the screen industries.'
