Summary

Sórcha Bradford and Alicja Kielbasa, the newest recipients of Sargent-Disc's Production Management for Film Scholarship, reflect on their experiences to date.

NFTS - New Scholars

Sargent-Disc is delighted to announce two new recipients of the Sargent-Disc Scholarship for the Production Management Diploma course at The National Film and Television School.

Sargent-Disc is delighted to provide scholarship support for two students taking the Production Management for Film Diploma course at the National Film and Television School (NFTS).

In September, the newest recipients of the Sargent-Disc scholarship were selected, and so we are delighted to welcome Sórcha Bradford and Alicja Kielbasa.

We caught up with them on their first few months at the NFTS and their experiences to date.

My first month at the NFTS has flown by and has been exactly as I hoped it would be. The hands-on learning approach encouraged by the school has made for an intense start, but the constant support of the staff as well as my colleagues has allowed me to hit the ground running and rapidly develop my filmmaking skills. I am currently production coordinating a first year film called 'Shelter' which will be shot in two weeks time. The run up to shooting has been filled with location scouting, movement orders and risk assessments - I have really enjoyed the challenge to my organisational and people management skills!

By far the best part of this project has been the chance to work with such an amazing production team. The level of talent and professionalism of everyone involved has allowed me to excel in my role, and I am aware that these opportunities are abundant in a school of such high calibre. I have also been able to work in a range of roles on other productions across the school - from production assisting a graduate animation project to 3rd assistant directing another first year film. The opportunities at the school are unending, facilitated as they are by some of the most successful people in the film industry, and I want to say a huge thank you to Sargent-Disc for helping me to take full advantage of these opportunities - I am looking forward to an incredible year!

I am honoured to be a recipient of the Sargent-Disc Scholarship and being an NFTS student means that I'm learning from the best in the industry - everyday I accomplish more than I could have imagined.

Since arriving in September I have been working on two projects. "Grandfather" is a 20 minute documentary film, a personal portrayal of the Director's grandfather who was jailed for decades for robbing banks in Israel during 1950s-70s. He was recently released from prison and the director wants to find out more about the reasons behind his Grandfather's criminal past along with the family trauma caused by the separation.

"Believe" is a 15 minute fiction film about an immigrant family, who travelled across the sea with a statue of the Water God to protect them on their journey to a new land. After decades, the family forgot about the God, so the abandoned God tries to find a place to belong in the new land. After a long journey he finds an abandoned boat, where a homeless man lives and together they attempt to rebuild the boat and escape. This is a huge studio set build on the NFTS Main Stage and we were delighted when Christopher Nolan (who was visiting the NFTS) popped in to see the set build - he was really impressed by the size of the boat and how ambitious the project was.

Along with all the additional Masterclasses and screenings I'm really making the most of every moment at NFTS!
