Auto Enrolment for the Creative Industries

Summary

We look at the highlights from UK Screen: Auto Enrolment for the Creative Industries event held in London on 12th February.

Auto Enrolment for Creative Industries

Auto Enrolment for the Creative Industries

Presented by UK Screen in association with Sargent-Disc and Wiggin LLP

On Thursday 12th February, Sargent-Disc supported UK Screen on an informative session which discussed the operational, contractual and financial aspects of Auto Enrolment through a series of presentations and an engaging panel discussion.

Auto Enrolment can be daunting for the media and production industries, with one third of the workforce in television and nearly half in film working on Schedule D freelance contracts, sometimes employed through third party agencies and often on short term and period contracts. This session was an opportunity for industry professionals to gain insight into Auto Enrolment and the opportunities and obligations associated with it.

Three presentations were delivered during the session, which provided valuable information on the Auto Enrolment process:

Laurence Sargent, Director, Sargent-Disc delivered a welcome presentation on Auto Enrolment for the Creative Industries and discussed the importance of planning for Auto Enrolment. He introduced the key stages involved with Auto Enrolment: preparation, worker assessment, contributions, notices and communications.

Seth Roe, Employment Lawyer, Wiggin LLP, presented in detail on how to assess your workforce. He explained who is in scope for Auto Enrolment, the contractual considerations associated with freelancers in particular, and provided a helpful guide on worker assessment.

Neil Esslemont, Head of Industry Liaison, The Pension Regulator, followed with specific information regarding employers' duties within the entertainment industry.

The presentations were followed by an engaging panel discussion and Q&A session.

The panel, chaired by Chris Brown, Financial Planner, LEBC Group included:

Seth Roe, Employment Lawyer, Wiggin LLP

Laurence Sargent, Director, Sargent-Disc

Neil Esslemont, Head of Industry Liaison, The Pension Regulator

Tina Odell, Associate Director, Group Pensions & Benefits, Time Warner

Ania Trela, HR Manager, Double Negative Visual Effects

Key points emerging from the interactive discussion included the importance of forward planning prior to staging, and working closely with the company's financial advisor and payroll provider to ensure all legal obligations from assessment, communication, payment of contributions and reporting are met.

Many of the attendees' questions centered on which types of workers would be in scope; how best to manage and deliver their legally binding auto-enrolment duties, as well as to the possibilities of identifying a pension scheme that would help workers regularly contracted on a short term / freelance basis to accrue their funds into one pension, rather than multiple schemes.
