2017 Grierson Award Winners Revealed

The 45th annual Grierson Awards celebrated the work of documentary filmmakers last night at a star-studded ceremony hosted by actor Stephen Mangan, in London.

Lorraine Heggessey, Chair of The Grierson Trust, opened the ceremony highlighting the importance of documentary filmmakers for they give us 'insight into stories that might be overlooked - or twisted - by the wider media.' She congratulated the winners on their work - clear evidence of their skill, dedication and passion.

Stars and personalities from across the industry presented awards during the evening, including artist Grayson Perry, Great British Bake Off Winner (2015) Nadiya Hussain, historian Dan Jones, scientist Dr Michael Mosley, biochemist and presenter Liz Bonnin and comedian Rich Hall.

The evening saw the BBC take home seven awards including the Sargent-Disc Best Science Documentary prize for Forces of Nature with Brian Cox: Episode 2, Somewhere in Spacetime. Channel 4 obtained 2 awards (Best Documentary Presenter: Grayson Perry for Grayson Perry: All Man and Best Entertaining Documentary: 999: What's Your Emergency? - Nobody ever said, "When I grow up I want to answer 999 calls"), with Netflix scoring one as well (Ava DuVernay's 13th for Best Historical Documentary).

Yvann Yagchi, a student at the NFTS (a Sargent-Disc Academic Partner), took home the Best Student Documentary for Acta Non Verba.
