Film Tax Relief News

United Kingdom
Recent enhancements to the UK Film Tax Credit include the extension of the top rate of tax relief (25%) on the first £20 million of qualifying production expenditure to all UK films, and a reduction of the minimum UK production spend requirement from 25% to 10%. The Cultural Test will also be expanded to allow for European as well as British culture. These changes should encourage increased film investment into the UK, enhance opportunities for Britainís visual effects sector and facilitate co-production.

A number of European countries have recently announced changes to their film tax relief. These include the Netherlands where a new film incentive with an annual fund of $27 million will be available to both domestic and foreign filmmakers, beginning in 2014. Also, Spain's Cultural Ministry has agreed a new financing model to increase incentives for the industry. It includes an increase in tax breaks for producers to at least 25% and a decrease in sales tax on ticket sales.

The European Commission has also approved a new policy allowing up to 80% of budgets to be raised via subsidies for lower budget films, and for aid to be given for up to 60% of the production budget for pan-European co-productions.
