Software and Training Newsletter, August 2013

Dear Subscriber,

In this edition of our Software & Training newsletter, we inform you of several developments which have contributed to a busy few months. We report on the recent Sargent-Disc BAFTA Filmmakers’ Market, an event held at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly on 13 July, which saw over 700 filmmakers in attendance. And, in the wake of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, we revisit the highlights of our involvement at the Marché du Film.

Also, read about our exciting developments regarding support for the National Film and Television School students and our Movie Magic Academic Partnership Programme reaching new film schools around Europe. We remind you of the programme's benefits, and provide you with some Budgeting and Scheduling training dates coming up soon.

The Sargent-Disc BAFTA Filmmakers' Market 2013

Earlier this year, it was our pleasure to announce a new partnership with BAFTA in supporting the Filmmakers’ Market. On Saturday 13th July, BAFTA 195 Piccadilly hosted a day of masterclasses, screenings and advice sessions, along with opportunities to network with fellow filmmakers. An optimistic atmosphere amongst the crowd demonstrated the shared passion for the craft, and projected an auspicious image for the future of the UK film industry.

The day kicked off with a session on Budgeting and Scheduling, featuring an expert panel that included: Terry Bamber (Production Manager and First A.D: World War Z, Skyfall); Samantha Waite (Production Manager and Line Producer: "Larkrise to Candleford", Man on Wire); and Nick O’Hagan (Line Producer: Quartet. Production Co-ordinator: Howard's End). The professionals dispensed valuable advice on Movie Magic Scheduling and Budgeting in the context of their most significant projects, which were aided by the capabilities of the software.

The Sessions

Other seminars included: 'Meet the Festival programmers'; 'EIS Funding and the Film Tax Credit'; ‘The Trials, Techniques and Triumphs of Crowdfunding’; and ‘The Director’s Masterclass’; plus many more. Additionally, a selection of film schools presented intimate screenings of a selection of student films, which showcased the calibre of talent emerging into the industry.

Sargent-Disc Scholarships for NFTS Students

Speaking at the UK Film Reception in Cannes, director Laurence Sargent announced two new scholarships for National Film and Television School students of Production Management, starting next year. We are delighted to continue our support for young filmmakers, and look forward to helping the selected students with both financial and industry support.

Academic Partners

This news was complemented by the announcement of Movie Magic Academic Partnership with the NFTS - a Creative Skillset Film Academy. The provision of this software will further equip its high-standard production suites. We continue to enjoy a strong relationship with the school, and recognise the value of its graduates to the film industry.

Cannes 2013 Review

Despite being a quiet year for UK film nominations in this year's Cannes Awards, the UK Film Centre was as active as ever at the Marché du Film. For Sargent-Disc’s retrospective on its involvement at this year’s festival, read our news item, featuring information on the WFTV Brunch, UK Film Reception, and our 1-to-1 sessions, which provided expert advice for independent producers.

UK Film Centre Seminars

The UK Film website features videos of the seminars held at its venue. This includes 'Creative Strategies for International Film Finance', which was moderated by director Laurence Sargent, and featured a panel of industry experts – an excellent insight into the developments of film finance over the past year.

Film Financing: the Whole Picture

Sargent-Disc contributed an article to the May/June issue of Moviescope, which discussed the aspects of film finance and its recent manifestations in the industry. The article is now available to read online.
